This is the first city where we are pulling in real data. Its home institution is IAAC. The data comes from four sources: Metroverse ECI (Harvard Growth Lab) for the economy, the reach of IAAC's fab lab, the Smart Citizen sensor network, and the Barcelona Open Data Portal. For now every reading is marked mock, meaning the data is not real yet. Environmental × City and Economic × City are the first two cells to move from mock to real as the data connections come online. The strip below lights up the moment the first real reading arrives.

What each cell looks like once it holds real data.

Twenty cells, the twenty parts of city life the Index reads. Each one gets a score between 0 and 1, a reading of how much the city can do there. Each one also carries a label showing whether its data is real yet: live, partly connected, or still a placeholder. And each names its source: Metroverse ECI for Economic × Region, the IAAC fab-lab catchment for Economic × Community, Smart Citizen for Environmental × City, the Barcelona Open Data Portal for Governance × City.

Generation 1 + 2: what Barcelona inherits

The Economic × City / Region cell.

No one has run the earlier versions of the Index on Barcelona. The first version (Utopies) covered French cities only. The second (Boeing) measured Hamburg. But we can say this with confidence: score Barcelona the old way, on the single Economic × City / Region cell, using the method shared between Florentin/Chabanel/Guimas and Boeing, and it would land right next to Paris and Hamburg. The ceiling has nothing to do with French or German statistics. It comes from the shape of global supply chains, which is the same everywhere. What FCI 3.0 adds is the other nineteen cells alongside this one, and ρ, how fast the city turns what it learns into action.
